Are you aware that most universal pedals nowadays come with a polarity switch to make it work with most digital piano keyboards? But then what’s the use of that. Earlier sustain pedals never had a polarity switch.
To understand that you need to realize that till a few years back, if you needed a sustain pedal for your piano-keyboard, you had to buy a pedal which was meant to be worked only with certain brands.
May be because the way keyboards were built, a pedal that worked with Yamaha need not necessarily would have worked with a Casio piano keyboard. So if you bought one without checking the compatibility you would have been in for a big disappointment. It would definitely have hampered with your piano playing.
Certain tricks did make it work in certain makes, say for instance, if you pressed the pedal and then switched ON the keyboard, the sustaining effect would work perfectly fine. Unfortunately though, this again was not a fool-proof method and worked only in certain cases.
Fortunately, manufacturers of pedals realized that and universal pedals nowadays come with a polarity switch which enables it to work with all keyboard brands. If your keyboard is giving a revers sustaining effect, just change the switch and it should start working normally again.
For instance, the m-audio universal pedal will work both with your Yamaha keyboard or a Casio piano keyboard.
